International sellers – Yes or No?

One of the current topics is whether we should open the site up to international users. We have received a substantial number of requests from the U.S.A and Hong Kong asking if they can be permitted to sell and buy on the site.

We are open to the idea however the opinion of our users will inevitably make the decision for us.

Please use this blog to have your say and help us decide whether international sellers and buyers would be a good or bad thing for our current users.

  1. Personally, i think its important these days to have a place to promote Australian products. Too many times i’ve clicked on a listing on ebay only to discover its located in hong kong or similar.
It’s time to take a stand do whatever we can promote aussie made.

  2. A lot of these international sellers sell on nearly every auction site in Australia. Lets keep it Australia wide at present – build up Australian membership. Give the smaller hobby sellers a chance as some of the Asian countries use these auction sites as a cheap way to sell their goods without having to pay out for expensive websites of their own.

If international sellers are allowed to join there should be restrictions on which countries. New Zealand and USA would be okay but places like China, Hong Kong, Thailand etc be kept out of it.

    This is Just My Opinion.

  3. No please dont allow international sellers, they load up the pages with utter crap hard to return faulty goods,my experience on e-bay is testamony to that, yes I have had a couple of positive transactions but the negative ones leaves a bad taste…

  4. Overseas sellers would be great as long as the buyer in Australia can be protected from parting with their hard earned only to suffer from non delivery. Aussie sellers should be able to sell overseas as long as they deliver and don’t cause a lot of hassles for Sellmystuff.
Great easy to use site. Bill.

  5. Hi Everyone – thanks for the comments so far.

We will take it all on-board. We have sellers in the US and the UK asking us about it, but we are mindful of the problems that this can cause for all of us. Many of the scams originate from O/S and we want to keep a tight lid on any of that.

As always – feel free to email phill > phill@sellmystuff.com.au or glenn > glenn@sellmystuff.com.au

  6. What attracted me most to this site was the fact that it was only Australia. I think keep it this way.

  7. I agree that you should keep cheap asian product off the site. I never use ebay anymore because everything you search for, there are reams and reams of cheap product fom Hong Kong, Singapore, China etc but postage will be $99 or some other extreme amount, and it takes too long to trawl through it all. I have only bought one item, a DVD and never again, it took 5 weeks to arrive, and was obviously home made junk. I don’t mind UK and US and NZ, I deal a lot with these countries, and have never been duped.

  8. Having all the horror stories from eBay regarding pirated software bought from Hong Kong, scam artists operating out of Indonesia, China, Africa and elsewhere, I am casting my vote to keep Sellmystuff Australia-only. I have sold stuff on eBay internationally without any problems, but things seem to be getting worse, as far as protection from unscrupulous overseas buyers/sellers go these days. That lack of security (as well as a dozen or more other reasons) is why people are ditching eBay in droves. It was great for little sellers once, but not any more. The feedback situation on eBay is also unworkable now too. Integrity from all parties is the only way online selling can work.

Keeping it simple – that’s what makes Sellymystuff great!!

  9. Hi All – thanks for the continued comments!

Its a very interesting topic of discussion. We continue to field requests from the US in particular for access and its an aspect of the site that we will continue to review. Obviously the support from existing members for Australian only is clear.

    Kind Regards
    Phill D.

  10. that is true about horrors story from ebay, or other selling site. But when we are looking from buyers way for them is better when they have more chose of the sellers, but for sellers from Australia is big problems sellers from china or Hong kong. And we know that 95% product come from the china and that is true. And that every seller imports item from china.
    regards

  11. Hi Jamesbond – thanks for leaving a comment on our blog.
I understand what you are saying. At the moment it seems like the majority of members wish to keep the site Australian only at the moment.

    Kind Regards

  12. Hi everybody ,looks like things are pretty rough for you down there with fire and floods, hope it gets better for you.

I promote wedding dresses and accessories and have been doing so for eleven years. All our dresses come from China but after careful choice of factories the reliability and the quality is second to none. There are bad products from any country so if you buy cheap you usually get cheap.
We promote free shipping and economic price and we do operate a returns procedure. Have a look at one of our sites and see what you think usually we are hundreds of dollars cheaper than a high st shop and better quality

    • Hi Stuart – thanks for the comment and the thoughts about the natural disasters we are going through. It certainly makes you feel very luck that you have all your family and a roof still over your head. We have had close to 24 hours of rain here and we wish it would go and rain down south in Victoria to put out the fires. Most of us in Australia have seen bad bush fires before but never anything like this.

      Kind Regards

  13. Your site is fantastic but it appears that you are not getting the support you need from the Australian public and more importantly, the Australian sellers. I have contacted sellers regarding their items and of these, 3 have not responded. As a buyer this is very frustrating especially and even more so considering Sellmystuff is so easy to use.

As much as I am for everything Australian, I feel that unless support from the Australian public increases, you will have no option but to make Sellmystuff available to international sellers. Buyers want items to buy and they want sellers to respond when an enquiry is made and as a business owner, I can’t see what is so hard about that. If you take the time to put items up for sale, it just makes sense that you would respond to any enquiries.

Something I have done is advertised my Sellmystuff Shop to all my customers, friends and family and asked them to pass it on the same way.

Guys, Sellmystuff is a fantastically simple site to use and by far the best value for money. I wish you well and all the success in the world but you need more sellers and if you are getting requests from sellers abroad, then it just proves that you have a good thing and they want to be part of it.

  14. I am in the US. I quit using Ebay years ago because of the problems with bad cs and non receipt. I had over 1100 fb, a very hard thing to leave behind. I never list worthless items, always respond quickly to inquiries. I would love to be able to join the site. I do agree that there should be some sort of limits to keep the worthless or sellers that list huge amounts and never respond. The site looks really good. Even if I can’t join, keep it up! One thing – a wanted section would be good. Best wishes :) Gina

  15. I tend to agree with the general opinion that this site should be reserved for Australian goods. But also understand that there are commercial considerations that need to be considered as SellmyStuff is a commercial enterprise.

The only suggestion I can make to this discussion is that overseas buyers pay a “good behaviour” bond which is only refunded if there are no complaints after 1 year of trading.

It could get complicated but it would soon sort the scam artists from the genuine sellers.

    Just a thought.

  16. I think you should open the site to the US only. It would be better for everyone. It would bring more money to the site and the sellers.

  17. I am a seller on NZ and i registered eariler on this site, but i did not complete the activation as it is stated that the site is only for Australia only. I was a bit disappointed about this. New Zealand and Australia have a lots of crossover business and i think this auction site should open to NZ. Trademe as the biggest auction site in NZ had already opened the door for the australians to buy n sell their stuffs.
